About the role

We are looking for a trained Bharatanatyam teacher to take regular batches at our HSR Layout studio. This is a teaching role in the traditional sense, not a choreography-for-annual-day role. You would be responsible for taking students through a graded curriculum — aramandi and the adavu families, then the margam repertoire — with the same insistence on clean basics that our academy is built on. You will work closely with our founder-guru, and you will be given real ownership of your batches rather than handed a script to follow.

What you would do

  • Take regular weekday and/or weekend batches for children (age 5+), beginners and adult learners
  • Teach within our graded curriculum — aramandi, adavu families, Alarippu through to Varnam and beyond
  • Give individual correction in small batches; track and record each student's progress
  • Teach abhinaya and the meaning of compositions, not only footwork
  • Prepare students for recitals, cultural programmes and arangetram where applicable
  • Communicate warmly and clearly with parents about progress and practice at home
  • Maintain the disciplined, devotional atmosphere of the studio

What we are looking for

  • Formal training in Bharatanatyam under a recognised guru or institution (Kalakshetra background especially welcome)
  • Completed arangetram or an equivalent standard of training
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience, or substantial senior-disciple teaching experience
  • Genuine patience with young children — this is non-negotiable for us
  • Sound grasp of tala, sollukattu recitation and the graded adavu progression
  • Fluent English plus at least one of Kannada, Tamil, Telugu or Hindi
  • Able to commit to a consistent weekly schedule (students depend on continuity)

About the role

We film a great deal — annual days, recitals, temple performances, class moments, student milestones — and we want someone who can turn that footage into video worth watching. The distinctive requirement here is rhythm: Bharatanatyam is percussive and mathematically precise, and an edit that cuts across the beat looks wrong to anyone who knows the form. You do not need to be a dancer, but you do need a good ear and the discipline to cut to the music rather than to a template.

What you would do

  • Edit vertical short-form video for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts from performance and class footage
  • Cut longer recital and annual-day films for YouTube and for sharing with parents
  • Cut to the rhythm of the music — footwork and beat alignment matter more here than in most editing work
  • Basic colour correction and grading (stage lighting and costume colours need care)
  • Clean up audio; balance music, nattuvangam and ambient sound
  • Add titles, subtitles and simple lower-thirds consistent with our visual identity
  • Deliver reliably to agreed turnaround times — festival and annual-day periods are busy
  • Maintain an organised archive of raw footage and exports

What we are looking for

  • Strong command of at least one editing suite — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro
  • A portfolio of short-form vertical video you have edited (please send links, not a CV alone)
  • A genuinely good sense of rhythm and music-led pacing
  • Comfortable with vertical, square and landscape delivery specs

Compensation depends on experience and, for teaching roles, on batch load. We do not advertise a fixed figure because it varies genuinely, but we discuss pay openly and early rather than at the end of the process, and everything is agreed in writing before you start.

Teaching Bharatanatyam in Bangalore

Bangalore has one of India's largest communities of Bharatanatyam students outside Chennai, and demand for properly trained classical dance teachers consistently outstrips supply — particularly in the south and south-east of the city. For a dancer who has completed an arangetram and wants to teach seriously rather than run annual-day rehearsals, this is a good city to build a career in.

What varies enormously between academies is how the work is structured. Many places hire teachers to deliver choreography for events, with the graded syllabus treated as optional. We work the other way round: our students progress through aramandi and the adavu families before repertoire, they learn abhinaya and the navarasa as a taught discipline, and performances follow from the training rather than driving it.

A teaching role here means small batches, real individual correction, and the traditional milestones observed properly — the salangai pooja when a student's footwork is ready, and arangetram preparation for those who reach it. Our students also learn Sanskrit shlokas alongside dance, so they come to the compositions understanding what they are dancing about.
